John graduated from Otago University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Dentistry. He then spent time at Lower Hutt Hospital gaining valuable experience as a Dental House Surgeon, before joining The New Zealand Defence Force as a Dental Officer (working in both the Army and the Air Force) before leaving for the UK.

During his time in the UK John completed 3 years of full-time Specialist training in Orthodontics at the University in Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff.  He gained a Masters Degree and Membership of Orthodontics at the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh).

"...with every patient I imagine I'm treating a member of my own family or a close relative and decisions I make are not  undertaken lightly.  I think it's really important to involve patients and parents along the way and I encourage parents to come into the surgery so I can give them a progress report at each visit....If we're all working towards the same goal, we're much more likely to get there!"

John returned to New Zealand in 2006 to set up North Shore Orthodontics in Takapuna, Auckland. Outside of Orthodontics, John enjoys running and mountain biking to keep fit and loves a spot of fishing.  He is married with two teenage daughters.

Why See A Registered Specialist In Orthodontics?

Orthodontists are Dentists who have undergone advanced training in Orthodontics. A full time 3 year degree involving approximately 2000 hours of study is undertaken at a university.

Specialist Orthodontists have the knowledge, skills and expertise to provide orthodontic treatment of the highest standard. We live and breathe Orthodontics – it’s all we do.

While some Dentists offer orthodontic treatment, they have approximately 50 hrs of orthodontic training during their under-graduate degree, and some have attended weekend courses to further their knowledge.

Giving Back To The Community

We are proud to be able to give a little back to the community we love and to those less fortunate. North Shore Orthodontics has been a long-time supporter of a number of charities including The Wish For A Smile Foundation, Kidney Kids NZ, NZ Downs Syndrome Association, Burn Support Group and the Starship Foundation. We also sponsor our own patients to help them fundraise for various events such as sports trips or charity events.
